What is a flu vaccination?

The flu vaccine stimulates your body's immune system to make antibodies to attack the flu virus.

If you're exposed to the flu virus after you have had the flu vaccine, your immune system will recognise the virus and immediately produce antibodies to fight it. It may take 10 to 14 days for your immunity to build up fully after you’ve had the flu vaccine.

Why is a flu vaccine important?

It's important because, while flu is unpleasant for most people, it can be dangerous and even life threatening for some people, particularly those with certain health conditions.

The antibodies, that protect you from flu, decline over time. Having a flu vaccine every year will protect you from flu strains that change from year to year.
